Walter Lewis Hanna

Walter Lewis Hanna was born November 15, 1936 to Walter Verne and Audrey Hanna. The oldest of two children, he spent his childhood helping with ranch activities. They spanned Wasco County from Bakeoven to Dufur, primarily growing wheat, cattle, and sheep. He graduated from Dufur High School in 1955, and attended college at OIT.

At age 27, Walter married Joyce Etcher. They ran a farm and raised children together. While their marriage did not continue, they remained close friends for the remainder of their life. Walter frequently visited her home, and was friends with her husband Tom. Holidays were spent as a family throughout their lives.

His childhood instilled in him a deep love of agriculture. He made this his life’s work, and was immersed in every aspect of farming and ranching throughout his life. Walter ran his own farm, raised cattle, sheep, and horses, worked wheat harvest, and spent many years working for North Central Ag.

Walter was a dedicated Dufur Ranger fan. He was a regular fixture at any sporting event, spending many hours and miles traveling to watch the Rangers play. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his friends watching ‘their’ Rangers play.

He is survived by his children, Jim (Glenda) Hanna and Susie Hanna, grandchildren, Walter Charles (Leslie) Hanna, Ben (Bethany) Hanna, Josie (Aaron)Turner, Holly Cant, 4 great grandchildren, 1 nephew, and 1 niece. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Verne and Audrey Hanna, and sister, Sally Hanna.

There will be a Celebration of Life potluck on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 1:30pm at Dufur Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Walter’s name to the Ranger Athletics Fund at Dufur School.
