Judith “Judi” Woodward
Judith “Judi” Woodward

Judith “Judi” Woodward

Judi said goodbye to life on earth early Thursday morning July 25, 2019. She spent her last hours with her sister Karen, sons Loren and Josh, daughter Tanya and her husband Paul.  Diagnosed with terminal lung cancer she faced the fight of her life and she fought fiercely.

She was born in The Dalles, Oregon, February 20, 1952. She is survived by her mother Marlys Krein of The Dalles; brother Bob; and sister Karen, and her children.

Judi and her husband Glenn bought their house in North East Portland, Oregon on Simpson Cour in 1978 and together they made it a home.

Her door was always open, much like her heart.

When her kids started school in the early 80’s she began a long career volunteering at Rigler Elementary where she worked with special needs children. Judi LOVED kids and was a stay at home mom until the early 90’s when she went on to teach at Kenton Elementary. Not only did Judi love kids, she enjoyed people. She was always quick to offer her beautiful contagious smile. She found lifelong friends working at the Beaumont Liquor store for over 21 years, she loved her job and was content with her life.

Judi enjoyed gardening in the summer, liked spending Thursday afternoons at the Cully Market, and loved her neighbors. She loved baking treats for friends, thunderstorms, snow, frogs, plants and classic cars. Especially her orange 72’ Jeep. She loved trips to the beach and camping in the mountains of Eastern Oregon with her family. She was never one to just sit around, always had to be doing something. Whether it be hemming jeans for a friend, taking a welding class, working in her yard or making jellies, she was always busy.

More than anything Judi loved and lived to be a Mom.

She always gave of herself asking nothing in return, the tiniest lady with the biggest heart. A friend to almost all and “Mom” to many. Her spirit will be with us forever.

May she rest in peace.

A casual celebration of life will be held for all family and friends on August 25, 2019 from 2-5 p.m. at Fernhill Park 6010 NE 37th Ave. in Portland Oregon, near Judi's home.

Please bring your favorite potluck/picnic dish and non-alcoholic beverage if you can.  Proteins, bottled water and some of Judi's favorites will be provided and the grill will be going. Please bring chairs if you can, some seating will be provided. This is an outdoor event so please plan accordingly.

Please bring a favorite picture of Judi if you have one.

We look forward to seeing everyone and sharing some special memories.

Anna Louise Monkiewicz

Anna Louise Flynn Monkiewicz, daughter of Louis and Enid Flynn, passed away on August 10, 2019, at home and at peace, her children by her side, at age 100.

MomFlorida1.jpg

Anna was born on April 4, 1919, in Natick, Massachusetts. At age 22, she moved to Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, where she worked as a riveter at Piper Aircraft and earned her pilot’s license. In 1943, she joined the Women Airforce Service Pilots and ferried military aircraft all over America. Since then, she has been a flying instructor, a medical records librarian, an office manager for Children’s Services, and a reserve police officer with The Dalles Police Department but said that her greatest achievement was being a wife and mother.

She was a gifted essayist and artist. She also enjoyed crocheting, reading, playing the piano and organ, and doing crossword puzzles—in ink. Until her last few weeks, she helped her children with obscure words in five different languages. She was nearly unbeatable at Scrabble.

She loved music: Yanni, Queen, The Eagles, and Supertramp. She loved hotdogs, road trips, storms on the Oregon coast, falling snow, Judge Judy, a good book, a good cup of coffee, and occasionally, a good martini—dry, with an onion. At age 94, she published an e-book memoir: “My Piece of the Sky.”

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Witold; her son Stanley, and her granddaughter Clair. She is survived by her children: David (Jill), Louis, Julie (Johnny), Bill, Annie, and Eileen (Steve) as well as by her grandchildren: Meera, Molly, Lucas, Beth, Logan, Colton, and her great grandchildren: Maryum, Yusef, Abby, Eva, Quinton, June, Peter, Clara, and Elliot.

John Schadewitz, a long-time farmer and rancher of Sherman County and recently of The Dalles, Oregon passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on July 2, 2019.

John was born on June 6, 1926 in The Dalles, Oregon, the only child of Carl and Polly ( Wilson )  Schadewitz.   He  attended  grade  school  in  Kent,  Oregon,  and graduated from Moro High School in 1945. John turned 18 years old on D-Day of WWII and traveled with his dad to town to register for the draft.  Later he was called in for an interview with a recruiting officer.  John was asked what he was doing on his family farm and John said, “Well, we have milk cows, beef cows, pigs, and chickens.  We are also harvesting hay and wheat.”  The officer responded, “I think you are doing more good for the country on the farm than in the Army.”  John was not drafted for WWII.

In 1955 John joined the United States Army and served as a mechanic at the US Army Transfer Station Fort Ord, also at the Army Base Hunter Liggett, in Monterey, California  during  the  Korean  War.   After  his  time  in  the  service, he returned to Sherman County to work with his parents and later to take over and operate the family wheat and cattle ranch until retiring. John was elected Sherman County Commissioner in 1980 and served in that position for 15 years.  Many of his hours were spent in meetings, travel, and county court proceedings. John  loved  to  visit,  to  share  a  meal  or  celebrate  a  holiday with friends and neighbors.

John found his Valentine and married Levina Jefferies on February 14th, 1981, they resided on the ranch near Kent. John and his family are remembered for their kindness and generosity.  They purchased many coats and shoes for neighborhood children in need of them during cold winters.  John shared his life and his livelihood to the lifelong benefit of others.  John, who’s giving heart followed in the footsteps of his parents, many times in many ways, provided  incredible levels of generosity.

John was preceded in death by his father, Carl; mother, Polly; and wife, Levina.  He is survived by a community of good friends and neighbors.
