Carl A Barnett, age 96, passed away July 7, 2021, at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles, OR. Carl was known to his many friends as Barn or Barney and to his loving family as “PA”.
Carl was born in The Dalles on February 5, 1925, to George Lawrence and Lola May (Schadewitz) Barnett. The family resided in Kent, OR and included siblings Melvin (Bud) L Barnett, Rose Ellen Palmer and Ernest (Gene) Eugene Barnett.
Carl married his high school sweetheart, Mary Helen Fargher, on May 22, 1942. They had three daughters, Karen Ann (Rogers) Murray, Pamela May (Jim) Duncan and Karletta Lea (Ralph) Carrithers. Grandchildren: Matt & Tracy Tidyman, Sheri (Dave) Talamantes, James J (Tricia) and Julie Duncan, Brian (Salena) & Jason (Sara) LaFaver. Great-grandchildren: Duncan Talamantes, Erika (Kevin) Cabral and Ryan Talamantes, Hailey & Lexi Duncan, Kayla Rott, Bryce, Brock, Lucas, and Samuel LaFaver. All family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren, were a very important part of his life.
Carl was proceeded in death by his parents George & Lola, his wife Mary Helen, siblings Bud, Rose (John), Gene (Janet), daughter Karen and her children Matt and Tracy Tidyman.
In 1939, Carl’s parents moved the family from Kent to purchase and operate the Cow Canyon Service Station, Cabins and Café. At that time, Carl started school at Maupin High where he met the love of his life Mary Helen. After their marriage in 1942, Carl worked for his father farming their property on Juniper Flat. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 during WWII. He was a Seaman 1st Class (Landing Craft Operator) in the Asiatic-Pacific. Carl was honorably discharged in 1946, at which time he returned to Maupin to be with his wife and daughters. Over the next 10 years Carl had many different occupations; he was involved in the 1947 construction of the PP&L highline crossing the Deschutes River; he and his family caravanned with other construction workers to many different job locations; owned and operated Madras Freightlines in Madras OR was a car salesman for Eddins Motor Co in The Dalles. He was one of their top salesmen, selling many cars & trucks to residents/farmers of south county. Carl and brother Gene purchased the Shell Oil Gas Station in Maupin in 1956, it was the beginning of Barnett Brothers Service. Carl also operated the Shell Oil distributorship delivering gas, diesel & oil to ranchers & farmers throughout south county. During this time Carl and Gene donated many hours to the Southern Wasco County Ambulance Service caring for and transporting patients to Mid-Columbia Hospital in The Dalles. Carl was also a part-time school bus driver for Wasco County Union High School where he not only transported students to school but to athletic events, senior skips, etc. In 1967, Carl began working for Wasco Electric Co-op as a ground man (grunt) out of the Maupin Office, he retired in 1987.
On a personal note, Carl was known to all friends, co-workers, and family as a wonderful man, with a huge heart and a love of life. His laugh was infectious, one we will all remember and cherish. Not only was he a bull-shitter (some even calling him professional) but he had a gift of sharing some of the best stories and jokes around. One of his families most beloved quotes is “I might not always be right, but I am never wrong”, it should have been “I never admit I’m wrong”, which we loved too. Carl was an avid hunter most of his life. He treasured his elk and deer hunting trips and found great pleasure reliving the stories with family and friends.
Some of the organizations Carl was involved with over the years: Maupin Lions Club, Elks, Eagles, Maupin Booster Club, American Legion Post #73, and Masons of Oregon. One of Carl’s proudest moments was in October 2020, when he received the Master Mason “65 Year Award” from the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Oregon.
In 1994, Carl and Mary Helen moved to The Dalles where they enjoyed a new retirement life. Unfortunately, after 55 years of marriage, Mary Helen passed away in 1997 after a long illness. Carl purchased property again in Maupin moving back in 1999. After several medical events, Carl sold his property and moved in with his daughter Karletta and husband Ralph in 2005. He was able to live with them until suffering a medical event that required him to move to the Oregon Veterans Home where he resided for two months before his death. Special thanks to the Oregon Veterans Home and to Nicole Pashek, ANP, for their kindness and care of our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Graveside services will be held at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in The Dalles on July 24th at 11am. Viewing of Carl will be available from 8 to 10am the morning of the service at Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home. A Memorial “Celebration of Life” (potluck) will follow at the American Legion Hall on main street in Maupin at 2pm.
Because of Carl and Mary Helen’s many years of service to Southern Wasco County Ambulance Service, donations may be made to: SWCAS, P O Box 125, Maupin OR 97037.

Clair Dale Taylor passed peacefully into Heaven on June 26, 2021. During his 89 years on Earth he was known by most as Dale, but those whom he loved the most called him dad, or papa, and best yet, Grandpapa.
Dale was born on January 2, 1932 in The Dalles, Oregon to Lloyd V. and Emma S. Taylor. He graduated from The Dalles High School in 1950 and joined the National Guard. Dale married Linda Marlene Stoop, his childhood sweetheart, whom he met in sixth grade at Joseph G. Wilson Elementary. Linda passed away in 1986 after 35 years of marriage.
In his life, Dale spent countless hours operating heavy machinery. He worked with the Oregon State Highway Department constructing the new freeway from Hood River to The Dalles. He also worked his grandfather’s wheat ranch on 15 Mile before becoming Street Superintendent for the City of The Dalles. In 1964, just after the major flood, Dale purchased his 955H Track Loader and built T&M Excavation Company. That same excavator now sits proudly near his home on Mill Creek, but in its prime, it built many streets and roads in The Dalles and Hood River. It excavated land for new homes and businesses and cleared many orchards for growers all around the gorge. The worn handles, shaped perfectly to fit his hands, show why he was known as an “excavating magician.” He never lost his touch operating big machinery. During the spring of 2020, he was thrilled to help his grandson pioneer new roads and prep areas for new cherry trees.
Dale spent twenty summers at the log home he built in Alaska. He loved fishing for salmon on the Kenai River, clamming for razors in the Cook Inlet, and catching halibut out of the Pacific. He held dear the many friends he met during his summers in Alaska. He also greatly enjoyed hunting The Blue Mountains. He hunted there for over 50 years, and in 2017 he drew the Mt. Emily bull tag which he filled surrounded by a camp full of proud and happy family and friends.
There wasn’t a day in his life that he wasn’t doing what he loved to do. He loved being around people and spent time doing things he enjoyed such as watching his great-grandchildren play baseball, building rock walls by hand around his home, and tending to his garden. He lived his life with hope, love, and a determination to “keep going”. His kind, friendly smile will be missed, but will forever be remembered by those who knew and loved him. His soul is now free to dance with loved ones in Heaven, operate air-conditioned equipment, and fish rivers overflowing with salmon.
Dale is survived by his son, Scott Taylor (April) and daughter Joni Tenneson (William). His grandchildren Jared Taylor (Stephanie), Jeffrey Taylor, Hailey Elliott (Shane), and Andrew Tenneson (Samantha) as well as his many great-grandchildren, Preston, Scotty, Matthew, Kellen, Easton, William, Camden, and Andie. He is also survived by his long-time friend Winnie Westland Milby, and his loyal dog, Sadie.
Service for Dale will be held at 10 am on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at Spencer, Libby, and Powell funeral home in The Dalles, Oregon.

“Life is a team sport played in many different arenas.” It involves tremendous support from, and to, family, friends, church and community.
John Harold Lundell was a life-long resident of The Dalles and he invested his time and talents in those many different arenas, which included the plumbing contractor business he built with his father, service to the City of The Dalles as councilman and mayor, and his passions for music and local history. He exemplified kindness and service above self. He loved his wife, Donna, who passed away unexpectedly in 2008, his children Kim (Dan Boldt) and Chris (Charlie Houmard); granddaughters Elise (Nat Woodsmith), and Alexa (Garrett Schmidt); great-granddaughter, Fern Woodsmith; sister, Marilyn Urness; the Oregon Ducks, fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, Twinkies, and anything by Ludwig van Beethoven.
He felt blessed in so many ways! And he was very modest about his accomplishments – among them: in the 1953 Oregon High School Basketball Tournament he was named to the First Team All-State and had the most points scored in the tournament; he was instrumental in the preservation and transportation of the Anderson homestead to the Fort Dalles Museum complex; he was awarded The Dalles’ Community Service award; he served the Oregon Mayors Association as president; he was appointed to the Historic Columbia River Highway Advisory Committee; he was the Cherry Festival Grand Marshall with his Cherry Sweetheart granddaughter Alexa; he was chosen as Wasco County Pioneer Man of the Year; and he had three published books on local history.
John was born October 23, 1935 to Harold and Beulah (Davis) Lundell in The Dalles, where he graduated from high school in 1953. He graduated from the University of Oregon, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta, in 1957. Married his childhood sweetheart, Donna Lee, in 1955. They were married 53 wonderful years! Passed away in his sleep June 13, 2021. The family will have a private burial service, and thanks the staff at The Springs at Mill Creek memory care unit and Heart of Hospice for their kindness and care. If you would like to honor John’s memory, donations to the Zion Lutheran Trust Fund, the Discovery Center, or Fort Dalles Museum would be lovingly appreciated.
We will always cherish his memory in our hearts. Please remember John, with a smile, whenever you hear something by Beethoven!
At this time, due to COVID, there are no plans for a public memorial service.
